1. Joint meeting of Swiss and Austrian Physics, Astrophysics & Astronomy
Societies, June 15-17, 2011, in Lausanne
The joint meeting of the Swiss Physical Society, the Austrian Physical
Society, the Austrian Society for Astronomy and Astrophysics, and the
SSAA will take place June 15-17, 2011 at the EPFL in Lausanne.
The program consists of plenary speeches, topical sessions, and
additional events. A special session on “Computational Astrophysics”
will be held Friday, 17 June.

2. Travel support by the CSR – invitation to apply for grants
The sc|nat Committee on Space Research (CSR) invites applications for
travel grants that are space science related.
Applications to the CSR should be sent to
Werner Schmutz, PMOD/WRC, Dorfstrasse 33, 7260 Davos Dorf
either by regular mail or by e-mail to werner.schmutz∂pmodwrc.ch.
The requests should include date, place, and the reason for the travel,
as well as an estimate of the overall costs. Regular support by CSR
will be a partial contribution. If the applicant wants the CSR to
consider to cover the whole travel costs an extra justification is
requested.
The deadline for the call is July 10, 2011.
The grant distributions will be communicated by end of July 2011.

3. 2nd call for “Astronomy Outreach” projects 2011
This is an additional call for “Astronomy Outreach” projects
in 2011 to be funded by the SSAA (up to 3000 CHF).
Funding is possible for diverse outreach projects, including support
for exhibitions, the preparation of material for schools, the
organisation of events, and alike.
SSAA members, researchers from the Swiss astronomical institutes,
or institutional members can apply. Projects will be funded on a
competitive basis. Please send a brief project description and your
budget request to daniel.schaerer∂unige.ch.
The deadline for the call is: september 2, 2011.

4. SSAA General Assembly, 21 october 2011 in Versoix
The next General Assembly of the SSAA will take place Friday
21 october in Versoix at the Geneva Observatory.
Please note the following:
1) Some time will be reserved for short oral presentations of PhD talks.
To apply, persons defending their PhD in 2010 or 2011, are invited to
send a title + short abstract to the Secretary before 2 sept 2011.
2) The selection of the 2013 Saas-Fee course will take place during the
Assembly. We encourage the community to propose exciting topics!
If possible please notify the President in advance of your proposal.
More information will be circulated in september and posted on the
SSAA Website.

6. New astronomyevents.ch webpage
A new webpage/calendar for advertising public astronomy-related events
in Switzerland has just opened: http://astronomyevents.ch/
The page is run by the SSAA in collaboration with the Amateur
societies. All institutes and amateur societies have access to it.
We encourage you to post your future events on the page! To do so
please get in touch with the contact person of your institute.

7. Miscellaneous information
– scnat elections: Thierry Courvoisier (UniGE) was elected President
of the Swiss Academy of Sciences (scnat) for a 3 year period starting
in 2012. Gerhard Beutler (UniBE) was elected as a new member of the
scnat committee.
– The State Secretariat for Education and Research has recently
published a
“Schweizer Roadmap für Forschungsinfrastrukturen”
